I CAN'T SAY THE NAME!

the name syndrome - site

"I feel stupid, but...

...I can't address people by their names, I feel embarrassed and blush when I try. It feels like it's too intimate to say the name or as if I would´nt have the right to. I just say "hey" to get someone´s attention and avoid having to speak out the name. "

Do you feel the same way? You are not alone. It is a so far unknown but not uncommon phenomenon: a inhibition to address other people by their names.

For my research I'm trying to learn as much as possible about the origin of this inhibition and invite you to share you experience with me! Write about it in my blog, leave comments, write your own questions and ideas in the forum, or send me your answers in a questionnaire (link below). Thank you!

"I wish he'd say my name...

...my husband never ever says my name in any conversation he ever has with me or about me. It makes me feel like I am "his" or not good enough for a name or I am not my own seperate person."

Do you feel the same way? You are not alone! During my research about the name syndrome, I came across quite a lot of women and men who suffer from not being called by their names by their partners.

"Why doesn't my girlfriend ever...

...say my name? She just says, "Hi" and then starts to talk. What should I read into this?"

ABOUT ME

I realised that I can't call my boyfriend by his name when I was about 18 years old. First I didn't think about it so much and thougth, maybe this is normal. I experienced the same thing in later relationships and it did bother me a lot. I thought "that it is something psychological, there will be some explanation". My research in the library wasn´t very succesful, because no one has ever written about not being able to call someone by their name! So I decided to do my own research and develop my own theory. As you may already have noticed, my english is not perfect - I hope you don't mind. My Idea was to make this website to reach as many people as possible as well as to connect people who share that experience. And I want to find out more... and want to ask for the experience of those who know the most about the names yndrome and it´s origin... - You! :)

I live and work as a psychotherapist in Vienna, Austria.
